SmartTable is an elegant combination of Newport\'s advanced damping technology, user friendly design and extensive manufacturing experience. It is the first and only actively damped optical tabletop in the market, leading the revolution of smarter vibration control products that are able to optimize performance specific to the user applications.
The core of the SmartTable is an advanced damping technology that is invented by Newport called Intelligent Damping (IQ). The creation of this technology began with an analysis of the dynamic properties of optical tables. Optical tables use pneumatic cells inside the table legs in combination with the table’s materials and design to reduce high-amplitude, low-frequency vibrations, typically caused by objects in the environment (people walking, building equipment, passing automobiles, and so on). These external forces create rigid-body motion, which is essentially two-dimensional, and does not affect most optical experiments. High frequency vibration sources in the kilohertz range do not greatly affect table stability; however, medium-frequency resonance and flexural vibrations (typically in the range of 100- 500 Hz) — resulting in the bending of an optical table’s surface—can greatly affect optical alignment.
IQ damping technology effectively addresses the medium frequency resonances of optical tables by incorporating two pairs of sensor and actuator in the optical table design and use an external controller to coordinate the signal processing, enabling the fast and accurate damping response for optical tables.
The figures above shows, in general terms, the feedback schematics. Each sensor-actuator pair is controlled by a separate control channel. The sensor senses the vibrations and the actuator outputs signal to compensate for the vibrations. The pre-amplifiers and band-pass filters condition the sensor output signal before feeding it to the digital controller. The digital controller implements recursive filters that compensate for the dynamic response of the shaker and correct the phase to bring the phase difference between the displacement and force close to (-π/2) in the desired frequency range.

One of the most important elements in SmartTable technology is the controller. The controller serves as the signal processing hub and feedback the processed signal to the active dampers integrated with the optical table. The newest generation of the controller features more reliable and powerful data processing capabilities and better damping assistance, providing the strongest support for the IQ damping technology.
The new ST-300 has 3 channels compared to the previous generation controller, opening new possibilities for more complex structure damping, including vertical and double layered structures built on optical tables.
